HOPE IN BROKENNESS

“Do-overs.” Oh, there’s so many times I wish I had a “do-over” because I wouldn’t have said what I did or made the choice I made. Are you with me? I remember when our son was young, he had a new, small metal car. It was morning and he was up, but I was enjoying the last moments relaxing before a busy day. He came into the bedroom, all smiles, and zipped the wheels of the car across our pine wood dresser. He didn’t know it would scratch the finish, but I did. Instead of sharing his joy about his new car, I scolded him about the damage to the dresser. He remembers the incident to this day; so do I. I crushed his little heart. Yes! I would love a “do-over!”

God is filled with so much grace, we get a plethora of “do-overs.” It’s easy to fall into worldly desires, to find ourselves falling short of what we expect of ourselves. Yet, God’s love for us says, “Come to me, I will forgive, and we can start over (my loose interpretation of several scriptures). God wants us to be whole. When we find ourselves broken or needing to change, God is right there waiting for us. I don’t know about you, but even though I couldn’t change how I reacted to the scar on the dresser, I did ask for our son’s forgiveness. God’s love is so much bigger, his forgiveness so much greater, and his grace so much more life-giving, there is nothing better than God’s “do-overs” because they can change our lives!
